Final Post card from North Wales

The Plas, Harlech

We have been back from our holiday in Wales for 2 weeks now and it is about time I showed you the last of the photos.

On the Thursday evening we went for a lovely meal at The Plas in Harlech.

We sat in the restaurant overlooking the terrace and the sand dunes and watched the sun set and rain clouds gather as we ate.

The Plas has a bit of interesting history to do with the film 'Out of Africa' and the real life characters it was based on, read about it on the web site here.

Friday was a bit grey when we woke and we decided to drive into the mountains a little.

We stopped in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
A town built on slate....literally!

I loved the sculptures of slate in the centre.

This one shows all the names of the different slate mines engraved on a piece of slate from that mine......

Then we drove to Porthmadog.
We walked down on The Cob.

A pretty little harbour

and a lovely little cafe that sold some gorgeous crafty things.

where I may of made a purchase or two!

It was a bit of a grey day.
We walked past the boat yards and the very expensive holiday homes around the headland to Borth-y-Gest.

The sun made a brief appearance!

It did clear up as we headed to afternoon tea at Hotel Maes-y-Neuadd

But this is what it looked like when we got back to Harlech!
We packed up on the Saturday and headed home....via Conwy.
We walked around the castle first.

Another built for Edward the first.

Then a spot of lunch

but we resisted the cakes!

Then we visited Plas Mawr.
Do you remember this post from last April?
We did not get in last time so I was delighted to see it was open this visit.

Cadw allow you to take as many photos as you want inside so....

Hall

The audio tour is worth taking, it explains the house was built for Robert Wynn (died 1598)

The building began in 1576
and the plaster work show the date 1577

The house has been furnished as it might have looked in 1665, based on a detailed inventory of the contents as well as contemporary objects and buildings.

Kitchen

The rooms are beautifully laid out, no ropes to stop you getting up close. 

You are told at the beginning of the tour that you are allowed to sit on any chair or settle that is against a wall.

We did not linger long in the garden or courtyard as it has started to rain.

If you are ever in Conwy please go and visit this lovely house. Cadw should be very proud of it (although they restored it all and now look after it the family still own it and cadw have it on a 99 year lease!)
As we left the rain became heavy and we decided to make for home.
